It’s crazy. It’s like the boogeyman. I can’t explain it but I can tell you I was in your situation. I never opened IRS notices when I was in my 20s and even my 30s. Well, I’m here to tell you that’s it’s waaaaaay better to take care of the notices you get or the tax filings you need to file NOW. Not later. The main reason is that if you have a balance, your balance will continue to accrue penalties and interest is compounded daily. Daily. I wish I could go back in time and slap my younger self for not staying up to date on taxes. They should teach us this in high school. It was so expensive for me. I digress.

If you get an IRS notice, or a notice from the California Franchise Tax Board, open it. And read it. It’ll tell you exactly what it is about. I know it’s like going to the gym. Some people have to work themselves up just to open it. It’s that mentally crippling for some people. But I’m telling you, it’s better to rip off the band aid and see what it’s about. It may not be anything of consequence. But at least it won’t be on your mind and stressing you out.
